2023 Carignan

This west side Lodi Carignan vineyard was planted in 1906. Mostly planted to
Carignan (although we believe there
might be a few unique vines scattered throughout the
vineyard), this is as old school as it gets.
Ancient head trained vines, widely spaced, are left
unbothered in a site that is almost never tilled
or watered; tough to walk through but beautiful. These vines
have watched the world change around them and they still
have a lot to say.

The grapes are brought into the cellar and gently placed into
an open-top fermenter. Clusters are left
whole and allowed to go through carbonic maceration
over a period of about three weeks. The
fruit is then foot-tread and pressed into neutral French
oak barrels. The wine is allowed to rest for six months
before bottling.

Fresh and dark-fruited, this wine is all spunk and
attitude. Bay leaf and sage add a savory element
that helps to lift the aromatic profile of the wine even
further. All this is carried by Carignan’s
hearty and earthy nature. Brawny but still light, this
wine can be enjoyed now or held for 7-15 years.
